Dogs get cuts, scrapes, post-surgical wounds, and skin injuries regularly. CBD’s anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties have generated interest in topical CBD application for dogs.

The Wound Healing Process

Normal wound healing occurs in four overlapping phases: 1. Hemostasis — bleeding stops, blood clots form. 2. Inflammation — immune cells clean the wound (necessary but can be excessive). 3. Proliferation — new tissue forms, wound closes. 4. Maturation — scar tissue remodels. CBD may influence wound healing primarily in the inflammatory and proliferation phases.

How CBD May Help Dog Wound Healing

Anti-inflammatory: CBD reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines that can cause excessive inflammation at wound sites. Appropriate inflammation is necessary; excessive inflammation slows healing. Antimicrobial: CBD has demonstrated antimicrobial properties against several bacterial strains including Staphylococcus aureus (a common wound-infecting bacterium). Analgesic: Reduces pain at the wound site, improving comfort and reducing self-licking/scratching that delays healing. Skin regeneration: CBD may support keratinocyte migration and wound closure speed.

Safe Application of Topical CBD for Dog Wounds

Important: Never apply CBD products containing essential oils (tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender) to open wounds on dogs. These can be toxic when licked or absorbed. Safe options: Plain CBD isolate dissolved in a safe carrier (coconut oil, MCT oil), CBD products specifically formulated for wound care, products without essential oils or fragrances.

When to See a Vet

Always see a vet for: Deep wounds, puncture wounds, or wounds that won’t stop bleeding. Wounds showing signs of infection (redness spreading, swelling, discharge, odor). Wounds that don’t show improvement within 3-5 days.
