Cats are creatures of habit profoundly affected by stress — from environmental changes to inter-cat conflict to medical procedures. Chronic stress leads to immune suppression, urinary issues, and behavioral problems. CBD has become a popular tool for managing feline stress.
Hiding more than usual. Reduced grooming or overgrooming (stress barbering). Appetite changes. Litter box issues — urinating outside the box is often stress-related. Excessive vocalization. Aggression toward people or other pets. Reduced play or interaction.
Cats have CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout their nervous and immune systems. CBD modulates serotonin signaling via 5-HT1A receptors, may reduce cortisol response, and promotes calm without sedation at appropriate doses.
For Daily Stress Management: HolistaPet CBD Oil for Cats (Full-spectrum, clean ingredients), cbdMD Paw CBD Cat Tincture (Broad-spectrum, zero THC, chicken flavor). For Acute Stress Events: Oil form CBD given directly (faster onset than treats), Penelope’s Bloom CBD Oil for Cats (vet-recommended formulation).
Under 10 lbs: 1-2mg CBD. 10-15 lbs: 2-4mg CBD. 15+ lbs: 3-5mg CBD. Give once or twice daily for chronic stress, or 60-90 minutes before a specific stressor.
1. Mix into strong-smelling wet food (tuna, salmon masks hemp smell). 2. Rub on paw — cats groom themselves and will ingest it. 3. Apply to ear flap — some formulations designed for ear absorption.
Cats are more sensitive to THC than dogs. Use broad-spectrum or isolate CBD when possible. If using full-spectrum, verify very low THC content on the CoA. Watch for: wobbliness, extreme lethargy, dilated pupils.
