Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is one of the most common health issues affecting cats, causing painful urination, bloody urine, and straining. Stress is a significant trigger for the most common form — feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC).
FLUTD covers several conditions: Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC) — most common (60-70% of FLUTD cases), strongly linked to stress. Urolithiasis — bladder stones. Urethral plugs — particularly dangerous in male cats. UTI — less common in cats than dogs. FIC is heavily stress-mediated.
Stress-mediated FLUTD (FIC): Chronic stress hormones appear to trigger FIC flares. Calmer cats have fewer FIC episodes. CB1 receptors in the bladder itself — the bladder has cannabinoid receptors involved in inflammation regulation. Anti-inflammatory Properties: CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects may reduce bladder inflammation during active FLUTD episodes.
IMPORTANT: FLUTD can be life-threatening in male cats if urethral blockage occurs. If your cat is straining to urinate or not producing urine — this is a VETERINARY EMERGENCY. Do not wait. CBD should complement, not replace, veterinary diagnosis and primary treatment.
